Built Site 1:500.

Entrances determine circulation.

Materiality

View from outside the theatre. Abstract material on the building which creates unusual shadowing and drives circulation. Theatre patrons can see each other through reflective and see through materials.

Conceptual Ideas.

Precedent: Henning Larsen Concert and Congress Centre. From this building the concept of materiality was obtained. This is experimented with twice and shown by a sheet of silver paper on the small 1:500 concept model. Materiality is shown as a wall on each section of the building which is either reflective or transparent. This allows people to watch others in the social space. It also draws people into the site and the lights and shapes of the city are reflected.

Precedent: Peter Zumthor Thermal Baths. A unique circulation has been derived from this building. Movement and social gathering spaces on the site are determined by where the buildings and doors are placed. A maze concept which allows for many different circulation and access routes. The theatres are underground as shown by the black in the conceptual models. This represents a journey into the earth where light has an impact on space, where one moves from natural to artificial and warm light. Cafes and ticket booths are all above ground and are shaped by the smaller buildings. An idea is that the outside stage is placed in the middle of the buildings as a way to frame the scene.

All these ideas were explored and developed using yellow trace. This included; circulation for different people, elevations, sections, plans and perspectives.

To further develop ideas I must work on the relationship to the river, and the way the above ground buildings function and are designed.

Draft images for concertina book. Analysis of the city.

The urban environment has evolved from buildings which used to be built to create a strong sense of space and connection to the outside. This sense of space can be seen in Parramatta Piazza. Design has developed with the function of creating a great design but sometimes as a monument or only for an internal function. Effective areas for circulation, gathering and meeting must be introduced in the theatre design as was in the Piazza.

Framing of the Piazza. Shuttering of the street. Vista of the theatre.

Finished work will be uploaded.

A stage within a stage.

West Side Story scene: Gym Mambo. A simple square room with people standing on one side and others dancing on the other. An amazing energy with people talking, dancing and walking in and out of the room. A sense of community is established.

Parramatta. Use of curved seating and walkway in the Piazza. People can watch others. A thoroughfare and a meeting place.

These ideas have inspired us in the creation of our stage design. We hoped to mimic these ideas in order to create an effective space.
