Built Site 1:500.

Entrances determine circulation.

Materiality

View from outside the theatre. Abstract material on the building which creates unusual shadowing and drives circulation. Theatre patrons can see each other through reflective and see through materials.

Conceptual Ideas.

Precedent: Henning Larsen Concert and Congress Centre. From this building the concept of materiality was obtained. This is experimented with twice and shown by a sheet of silver paper on the small 1:500 concept model. Materiality is shown as a wall on each section of the building which is either reflective or transparent. This allows people to watch others in the social space. It also draws people into the site and the lights and shapes of the city are reflected.

Precedent: Peter Zumthor Thermal Baths. A unique circulation has been derived from this building. Movement and social gathering spaces on the site are determined by where the buildings and doors are placed. A maze concept which allows for many different circulation and access routes. The theatres are underground as shown by the black in the conceptual models. This represents a journey into the earth where light has an impact on space, where one moves from natural to artificial and warm light. Cafes and ticket booths are all above ground and are shaped by the smaller buildings. An idea is that the outside stage is placed in the middle of the buildings as a way to frame the scene.

All these ideas were explored and developed using yellow trace. This included; circulation for different people, elevations, sections, plans and perspectives.

To further develop ideas I must work on the relationship to the river, and the way the above ground buildings function and are designed.
